First off, you'll need some water.

The tools of the trade

Making soap is not all that complicated, but you'll still need the right soap making supplies in order to do the job right.

First off, you'll need some water. Formulas or recipes for soap making will tell you the exact quantities you should use. Second you'll also need lye, otherwise known as sodium hydroxide. You'll certainly want to avoid any direct skin contact with lye, as it has a corrosive quality. Once you have these two ingredients-water and lye-you should add the lye to the water and stir while doing so. As experts have pointed out, adding the water to the lye could result in an explosion wherein the lye could burn anyone nearby. So you should be sure to add the lye to the water, which will prevent an explosion scenario.

After this step, you must allow the mixture to cool down. Then the third ingredient, fat and oils, must be added. You don't have to be fussy when it comes to choosing which fat and oils to use. For instance, many professionals say any type of fat from animals or oil from plants can be used. To determine what kind of soap will best suit your needs, you may want to experiment by using different fats and oils to make various bars of soap.
